Dan LoBue - Senior Associate - Smart Grid
Dan LoBue, Alliance Associate and also founder of Competitive Energy Consulting, has more than 30 years of experience in the power production and energy business. His professional focus is in assisting energy companies that strive to be successful market leaders amongst their peers, rather than operating in crisis management. Mr. LoBue produced these results through his adept knowledge of energy market strategy, asset management techniques, energy market design & protocols, risk identification & mitigation, asset/portfolio valuation, transmission and distribution. Mr. LoBue’s advice on commercial operations optimization strategies have an 18 year time proven record of both reducing cost and increasing efficiency and profitability. As a Subject Matter Expert, Mr. LoBue has been retained by multiple third party vendors to provide the functional design and requirements for the development of industry leading technical solutions such as decision support tools for portfolio optimization, interfacing with RTOs, energy efficiency and Demand Side management. Mr. LoBue has advised alternative energy developers and demand side management providers on operational and commercial management activities specific to successful RTO operations. He was the Project Manager on a $10 million compliance mandated ATC/flow based calculation and OASIS management system. Mr. LoBue developed and delivered training to both internal RTO staff and external market participant on the new SPP “Day 2” RTO Integrated Marketplace and as a strategic adviser / implementation architect on the most complex RTO integration, to date valued at $110 Million. Most recently Dan has been focused on CAISO EIM activities, analyzing and developing functional operational design of various DR programs and assisting client enter new RTO markets.
Prior to founding Competitive Energy Consulting, Mr. LoBue served as the Principal Regulatory Representative for Progress Energy Ventures. He represented Progress Energy Ventures at various RTO Committees and was responsible for providing market intelligence, analyzing and optimizing challenges both within and outside larger regulatory structures.
Mr. LoBue utilized previous experiences in trading, asset management, origination and operations to optimizing both the Progress Ventures portfolio and EMA contracts by over $12 million annually. He directed evaluations of commercial impacts of various market structures, impacts of physical, financial, regulatory, transmission and tariff changes to the portfolio and valuation of structured deals
Prior to working at Progress, he held senior management positions for TransAlta and the Merchant Energy Group of America’s (MEGA) in Annapolis Maryland, As a Senior Director, Mr. LoBue was commercially responsible for the physical trading and asset optimization in the Northeast, including over 1,550 megawatts of generation. He participated in committees and working groups for the development of the ISO/RTO markets (i.e. NYISO, PJM, IMO & MISO).
Mr. LoBue was also employed, for 10 years, by Central Hudson Gas & Electric in New York as a Power Delivery Manager, System Operator and a Plant Operator. Mr. LoBue also served as a Nuclear Reactor Operator on a submarine for the United States Navy.
